Gartner analyst explains big data process
TechTarget recently reported on a Gartner presentation designed to help big data users draw insight from their wealth of information. According to the news provider, the rise of big data is the result of a convergence of IT programs. The new landscape is based on companies learning to harness data sources that are easy to find but have previously been inaccessible.
Gartner analyst Doug Laney, TechTarget reported, stated that many companies are already in possession of the unstructured data they need to begin analytics. They simply have to find a way to harness it. In addition to internal information, he also stated that the government can provide companies with data sets well-suited to big data analytics.
"Taking it on faith that there was some value here may have been OK when we were dealing with smaller data,” Laney said, according to the source. "Now we need to think about driving and measuring information value."
The rise of big data analytics, according to a recent Sydney Morning Herald report, has developed into a phenomenon. It stated that big data is already providing predictive insight at companies from retailers to telecommunications firms to healthcare providers.
