Franklin-based cognitive computing company Digital Reasoning has closed a $40 million Series D round, a significant investment for one of Nashville's few tech companies that grew up outside the health care industry.

The round ( half of which was reported in early February) now comes as the company embraces health care, and includes a $5 million investment from the venture arm of Nashville-based hospital giant HCA Holdings. It was led by Lemhi Ventures, a Minnesota-based firm whose most notable Nashville investment to date was in Shareable Ink(later changed to Shareable), a health-tech firm purchased by Digital Reasoning earlier this year.

“Digital Reasoning is helping health care professionals deliver better patient outcomes and achieve greater operational efficiencies by uncovering insights that were previously concealed within electronic health records ... and other health care datasets,” Tony Miller, founder and managing partner of Lemhi Ventures, said in a news release. “We recognize just how disruptive Digital Reasoning’s cognitive computing approach is, and are confident they have the right team to truly help providers, payers, and patients fundamentally make better informed decisions in less time."
